Private School Training

Whether you are a beginner, experienced stylist, manager or salon owern, there are numerous opportunities to attend special training courses.

To ensure career and personal development and job satisfaction, skills must be continually upgraded. It is essential to keep up with the latest trends and techniques, in order to provide the best possible service to clients.

There are a number of private schools offering training. These schools offer a range of full-time and part-time courses, some offer night classes for those who can't attend during the day. They cater for the complete beginner to the hairdresser who wishes to update certain skills. Courses range from one day to eighteen months duration depending on the skill, knowledge and standard required. All age groups are catered for from sixteen to the very mature adult. Certification on such courses is varied.

Most schools give their own in-house certification while others are affiliated with the World Hairdressing Federation and City & Guilds. Course fees and content vary hugely so it is advisable to check out what each centre has to offer before making a decision. Tutor/pupil ratio is also important.

It is very important to get the foundations correct. The very best training wil alwasy stand to you long term. It is your future so be sure to check out ALL your options before making a decisioin.

The Hairdressers Enemy

Dermatitis is the Hairdressers enemy! It is an irritation or inflamation o fht esin due to the exposure to Hairdressing Chemicals. Dermatitis is not infectious. The skin becomes itch, red and blistered. After continual episodes the skin becomes hard, thickened and cracked.

Hand hygiene and care is vital for all hairdressers. All employees should be made aware of the importance of wearing gloves when using chemicals. It is the salon\'s responsibility to provide protection for their employees. It is you the Hairdressers responsibility to take care of your hands - they are your livelihood. Wear the gloves provided! Don\'t take risks!

There are two forms of dermatitis - they look exactly the same but have significant differences:

1. Irritant Dermatitis occurs when a substance used in Hairdressing is in contact with the skin and irritates it. It usually occurs on the hands and face. Common irritants include wet work (such as shampooing) and the alkalis/acids in Hairdressing products.

2. Allergic or Sensitivity Dermatitis occurs when a substance used in Hairdressing causes the hairdresser to become sensitised or to develop an allergy to the substances. After the initial period when sensitisation occurs, which can be from days to years, each time the hairdresser comes in contact with that particular substance, (even in very small amounts) dermatitis will develop. Common problem substances include hair dyes and hairdressing chemicals.

Gunn Robinson O\'Higgins, the Insurance Brokers for the Irish Hairdressers Federaiton, offer a special Insurance against Dermatitis for the hairdresser. For further details contact 01-2835252
